That thing on the outside is the condenser.
The refrigerant takes the heat that's on the inside and releases it to the outside. The thing inside, the evaporator, seems to get cold when the refrigerant vaporizes inside it. The refrigerant then travels outside in a vapor and is turned back into a liquid (condenses) outside.
That huge fan out there helps to dispel the heat that's held in the condensed refrigerent.
So if the tubes behind that screen can't breath, that is, if air isn't allowed to freely circulate around those condenser coils, your AC won't be able to move the heat from where you don't want it to be, to where it doesn't matter, as efficiently as it would were your coils clean.
It won't necessarily harm your AC but you'll have to run it longer to achieve your desired goal (a cooler home) and so your electric bill will be higher than it need be.
Use your garden hose to wash out the leaves and lint and dead bugs, etc.
The outside unit is made to be out in the elements (rain, snow, etc.) but there are electrical components inside it, so it won't hurt to go ahead and shut it off at the small breaker box which is probably located near to that unit.How do you clean off all the lint and crap off of the screen around my central air system outside of my house.
Yes it does decrease efficiency. Change your filter every 6 months to prevent it from building up. I also have my air ducts cleaned once a year. That stuff is dust and traps more dust and bug feces then blows into your home.
Either take it off and wash it with soap and water and a scrub brush. Then dry off. Make sure your power to your AC is OFF First !!! Or if you can get to it with a Shop Vac try that. Good Luck!
Hose it down %26amp; change filters monthly. The dirtier it is the harder it must work and the more electricity it uses.
Spray it with water from a garden hose.
I believe the air flows better to cool the coils when it's clean.
