Manageable plant to screen a gap between two houses?

I'm looking for a plant to screen my patio in the rear garden from the front of the house. The gap between my house and next door is small, So the plant only needs to be around 50 cm wide, but about 6-7 ft tall.

I only want to have to trim it once a year and am prepared to wait a few years for the size I want.

Any Ideas?Manageable plant to screen a gap between two houses?
I'll be totally unoriginal and suggest a clematis if you have something that it can climb on like a trellis.

Try one of the taller Bamboo plants, Different and can form a thick hedge. To stop it spreading to much (does this by sending out runners from the roots) either sink a trough in the ground (with a couple of drainage holes in bottom) then plant it in this and keep well watered to start with, or use a spade now and again to trim the roots. Bonus is once established will never need to buy garden canes again. They come in various colours, are different and when a breeze catches them the leaves rustle.
Taxus x media 'Hicksii' or 'Hatfieldii' (Hatfield or Hick's Yew)

will do well in sun or shade.
